Thuraya Places Hopes on Integrated GPS/Voice/Data/GmPRS Sat ModemAug 21, 2007GPS World
United Arab Emirates-based Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Co. and several of its technology partners are working on specialized communication applications based on Thuraya's multi-mode satellite modem, the company said earlier this week.
Dubbed ThurayaModule, it supports circuit-switched voice, data/fax, SMS, GPS and GmPRS communications, according to the company. It has been designed to develop new business partnerships in the satellite application development industry, and broaden the company's revenue streams, Thuraya says. U.S. and European application developers are already testing ThurayaModule in prototype products for military surveillance, vehicle tracking and maritime fleet management, according to the company. The device has a huge potential in terms of diversifying Thuraya's current portfolio by providing such services as tracking, SCADA, surveillance and other remote communication applications, said Imtiaz Hossain, Thuraya product manager for third-party developers and accessories.He suggested that the company has already received attention from developers and system integrators interested in new satellite applications for their multi-sector customers. "Some prototypes for tracking and monitoring on ThurayaModule have been produced and are being tested with a view to evaluating their performance and viability. Once all tests completed, they will be launched and marketed to potential clients," Hossain said.He further said that the company is also receiving a lot of queries on GmPRS applications for the ThurayaModule, as many developers find GmPRS useful and economical for tracking applications. ThurayaModule could also be used as a machine-to-machine communication device for stationary data-loggers in places without terrestrial coverage, Hossain suggested.Thuraya is looking to applications built on ThurayaModule to drive business, but not the device itself; it doesn't expect sales of the low-cost device to have much of an impact on its bottom line. "However, it is the usage build-up of the module once sold to clients that will drive our network usage and revenues. And that is expected to happen next year," Hossain concluded. .headerLeft_181275{background-color: #FFFFFF; background-position: top left; }
